Frequently Asked Questions
Is Feelings School™ a group or individual model?
Feelings School is an individual child psychotherapy model which includes a parental guidance component as well.
How long are the sessions?
The child meets once a week in person for 45 minutes; parents have separate 60 minute bi-weekly virtual sessions with the therapist.
How long will my child be in Feelings School?
Most children will complete the curriculum within 8-12 weeks.
What happens at the end of Feelings School?
We have a party! To celebrate the child’s (and parents!) accomplishments, parents are invited in for the entirety of the last session to review the child’s auto-biography, reflect on the gains made, receive a certificate, eat some cupcakes and plan for the future. We always leave the door open for check in sessions in the future. Sometimes, a few months down the road, you will hit a roadblock or two and it will be helpful to return for a “booster” session or two. Sometimes that is all a child needs. Other times, it will benefit them to do another round of Feelings School.
Can my child continue if they want to?
Yes, we do provide on-going therapy; however, we always start with Feelings School because we really believe in the model and have seen it work. If you get toward the end of the 8-12 weeks and you feel your child and you are enjoying it and making progress but feel you might need additional support, you discuss the idea of continuing with your therapist. If we decide to continue, we will first complete FS treatment–as promised, we will end with a party!--we want to honor the “contract” set up with the child. Then, we will decide together to embark on another series of sessions. We call it Feelings School 2. It will most likely have a more narrow focus than Feelings School 1. In the course of Feelings School 1, we often discover an area that might benefit from a deeper dive–peer relationships, sibling dynamic, managing ADHD. In Feelings School 2, we will take that deeper dive.
Do you accept insurance? Will I receive an invoice for out of network reimbursement?
We do not accept insurance; however, if you have out of network benefits, we encourage you to submit for reimbursement. We ask that you pay by credit card for each session as we go. You will receive a receipt upon payment. This receipt is not adequate to submit to insurers for reimbursement. Instead, we will provide you with a Superbill once monthly. Superbills will include diagnosis, address, Tax Id, CPT codes, NPI numbers, and dates of service–everything your insurance company will need to process your reimbursement.
How involved am I as a parent?
You will be involved in three ways:
Child sessions: one parent will join for the last 15 minutes to “learn” the skill of the week;
Homework: you will practice the skill with your child throughout the week;
Parent sessions: every other week, you will meet with the therapist for a 60 minute parent session where you will explore
Can you collaborate with other providers?
Yes. At times, it might be beneficial for your therapist to connect with another service provider with whom you or your child is working (teacher, childcare provider, psychiatrist, parent coordinator, speech therapist, tutor, etc. .). Case Management/Collaboration of care might consist of phone calls, letter writing, attending meetings or scoring and analyzing an assessment instrument. WeI will need to have you sign a HIPAA release of information prior to contact. This service will be billed in 15 min increments at $200/hour.
What is your cancellation policy?
We have a 24 hour cancellation policy and will ask that you cancel within this time or understand that we will have to charge you for the session.
